Visiting Kim Phú in the flood season: 6 things to know

· Guides · Kim Phú Commune

In September and October Hung Tru valley becomes a lake and Tân Hóa's floating houses rise with the water. The most striking time of year, if you prepare.

1. Floods come in September–October. Heavy rain cannot drain through the mountains fast enough, Hung Tru valley becomes a lake and about 2 km of the road to Yên Hợp goes under. Boats run along the road; visitors kayak in.

2. Ask us before you go. Water levels change with every storm, and after big storms some areas may be cut off. Message us on WhatsApp +84 932 299 885 for the day's conditions.

3. Always wear a life jacket and go with a local. Don't paddle alone into deep or fast-moving water.

4. Caves close in September and reopen from October. Some routes may close when water is high; check with Oxalis before booking Tú Làn.

5. Sleep in a floating house at Tân Hóa. The houses are built to rise with the flood; this is when you see why the village can live with it.

6. Waterproof your electronics. Keep phones and cameras in dry bags; bring a rain jacket and water shoes.
